We advocate The Open Source Initiative. Very often when we think of the web we visualize websites designed to promote our business, market our products and inform our visitors. Yes, many websites do only these specific things and do them very well. We expect the websites we visit to provide us with the information we are seeking and do it in an intuitive and logical way with great visual appeal. However, websites have the potential to do so much more. Imagine if you will a beautiful website with awesome visual appeal that contains exactly the specific information that you are looking for. This gem is out there somewhere on the internet but you will never find it. The reason you can’t find it is because the web designer neglected to address information about the site in such a way that a search engine could interpret it. This is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short. Every site requires at least some SEO to be found.
If you have a website that is not being found when you search for it, you may not have proper SEO. If you are seeking SEO you need to be watchful for a couple of things. First, understand that every page and website is different and requires specific attention. There is no one single thing that can be done the same way on every site to get it ranked well. There is no quick fix. Some companies may offer you first page positioning and later you learn your first page position is just being in the map section. Something you can and should do yourself. Next, be wary of “Guaranteed Rank”. A page cannot be guaranteed without careful review period. Organic positions on the page, (not the paid spots) have a number of factors associated with them that put them on the list and at the top of the list. Content is king when seeking a higher position. A well constructed message with the correct combination of words that match to the keywords is essential. Do not attempt to over saturate the content or keyword either. This does not service your visitors and can actually cause you to get a crummy ranking with the search engines. Good SEO takes time and patience. The changes you make to a page may not be seen by the search engine until the next visit by them and that may be many days in-between. So, beware of false promises for quick ranking, unrealistic guarantees, and cheap pricing when you seek to SEO your site. A good webmaster should explain the process to you and provide examples.
Does your website perform a business function online besides just advertising your business? Adding tools, forms and applications can transform your little claim on the net into a business generator. Sometimes simple is best. For example, add a savings calculator to show visitors how much they can save by using your services. A simple, interactive script can do the job nicely.
